If anything this current era of gaming isn't really that much different than the 1980s UK development scene, except that there are hardly any UK developers these days.

I know the arcade ports were like the AAA games back then with similar conditions (inexperienced staff having short deadlines, overworked and underpaid with publishers doing crafty tricks e.g. high scores, taking screenshots from either the arcade version, the best looking version or even mockups) and the indie games were like the indies games of now. Only difference really is that instead of downloads they were on tape (and disc if you was lucky) and sometimes had to rely on magazine cover tapes. Some games like VVVVVV would have really fitted in with the Spectrum era.

If anything games like this would have been ignored back then, like the metric ton of games on Steam/mobile now.
