I told you all that they weren't sprites.

@Flusak: Not in Super Mario Maker it isn't. In the original New Super Mario Bros. U, it is, but Nintendo deliberately rendered all of the enemies and background objects as sprites with normal maps (or rather, "2D models") so that people can load up a stage with dozens upon dozens without there even being a chance for the game to lag. Optimization works wonders for games like this.

Yeah, you may have noticed in 60fps footage that certain NSMBU things in Mario Maker had less frames than in NSMBU itself.
It also appears that a mask was used for the different shading per level, which I haven't thought of myself.
