They changed a few pixels, but most of the shell is from Mario Kart. It's a little easter egg just like Mr. Saturn from Earthbound.
For some weird reason I never noticed that there were easter egg items.

@thejohnston7: Seeing how the right half of the star on top is a completely different color, it might have been a mistake on the artists' part and they forgot to correct it.
I don't understand why the Christmas tree uses two different palettes.
