ironically, Earthbound 3 (Mother 3) did the same thing with a ? right next to the "END" word and there was no more sequel planned lmao. Was this created during a time they thought about doing a Earthbound 4? or they just leave this ? there for fun?
People who didn't know about Mother 3 seeing this were probably confused, if they saw it at around the early 2000s

that "END?" screen in Mother 3 is a fake ending and you can still walk around, the word END will move around and you can talk to people for a bit before the real end and credits happen.
If you turned off the game at the END? screen and thought that's how Mother 3 ended then you missed a big important part of the ending as well as the credits.
