Sadly, that seems to be at least somewhat up to speculation.The four of them appear to connect vertically, but look entirely different from the rest of the background. They look more than anything like just leftovers from an even older version of the background that worked differently.

I kinda like the capsules here than how they are in the final version where they just slapped the original sprites in the same size and gave them the background palette.

@Tech Yeah, I read the description and know what to expect from them when I see them.

I also find it interesting how the tank things in the upper half have "E.G.G" on them.

Yeah those "AA" tiles are internal placeholders for animated tiles. You can find similar stuff in the tile data of other stages; the swinging ball tile objects in Hydrocity used domino pips for its placeholder, for example.
