Sorry Sonic Advance, Sonic 2 beta beat you to it with Neo Green Hill.
Ah, I remember this wasn't just in the beta, but it was also the title screen for the Nick Arcade version of the game. Back then it was just the Prototype version of the game.
Also I think the Timer shows how many sprites are on screen. Actual sprites. Not the background, not most of the tiles.
