@Lunar994 They fixed the bounding box (I can't remember the right terminology) of the first non-rotated block sprites, they were missing before.

@Greenknight9000 What changed?

YEAAHH! Glad this sheet got an update!

@Danny Jarquin I like them too

am i the only one who likes these special stages?

can someone make some sort of tutorial on how to make this background animate properly? because i dont have a clue as to how it was animated

Are those fish and birds pre-rendered?

@Greenknight9000 i think its because they too lazy to make it change pallete in their blinking

I do wonder why the Pink and Green Emeralds had a unique flash sprite. Maybe they were seen as the more significant or special ones?

@thelonelysoul12345: It could be a reference to M.C. Esher's Sky & Water. Why? I have no idea...

They're part of the background
not sure what the point of adding them was in devoplment tho

Simple answer: Memory limitations

Is Sonic rolling in this stage, or jumping?
He spins, for he does not know.

@dogefan91 it's because the Genesis in its stock configuration doesn't have hardware graphic rotations like the SNES does with Mode 7, therefore they had to include all the possible rotations needed to render the stage.
(I say "stock configuration" because the Sega/Mega CD add-on does, in fact, provide this hardware rotation support, as does the 32X)

Gotta collect those 10 chaos emeralds!

@dogefan Well, 15. But yeah, that's still a fairly large disconnect. It all has to do with SPEED.

its weird: SEGA will make 30 frames for turning blocks in the special stage that we rarely see and leave sonic with a 5 frame jump animation.
