well it wasnt actually a sprite swap
the title screen had removed the 2 player vs mode, but it can still be accessed by changing 00A6's value to 01 which can also produce a weird result as... luigi sonic in the continue screen goes like the game went to a rom corruption

It's a bootleg. As far as I know, the Red Sonic sprites are for the normal form, not fire, not super.
Also you should see the ending to this hack, or the so-called "Super Mario Bros 2" hack, which is a sprite hack of THIS BOOTLEG. Just like the edits of Somari, the Sonic the Hedgehog edit, known as Sonic 3D Blast 5, along with a patch to start out in Green Hill Zone. Then there's Sonic & Knuckles 5, again, a hack of Sonic 3D Blast 5, which is just the title music being the S&K main theme, and obviously the sprites are 8-bit versions of the S&K title screen.

This world is so confusing.
