@SonicHex they used for the extra color shading but for unknown reasons knuckles' pallete just makes the extra shading color green (same for s3 sonic)
@SonicHex It's also used by Knuckles, although I don't see why they couldn't have just swapped the blue out for the green whenever Knux is playable.
so basically they could still have used an extra color on sonic but wasted it with a green color hue that only is used by super sonic's eyes in a few frames
