I find it interesting that P.D. starts out the battle as the most horrific thing ever, and becomes more easy to look at (and humanoid) as the battle continues. It's the exact opposite of what many final bosses will do.

It's called the "Bishounen Line". It's kind of like with Cell or Freiza in DBZ. Cell's the prefect example since he starts off as a grotesque caterpillar, evolves into a nightmarish alien, then becomes a laughably evil "pupa", before metamorphosing into his Perfect Form, which is what you'd expect a human version of him to look like. With Freiza, "This isn't even my final form!"
