The Macintosh version was MUCH better. Believe me, I've played it.

The company known for bad practices. Unsurprising as even the font is begging you to not play it.

I don't suppose there was an SNES port; because that one actually DID have a mouse.

You got that right. The Angry Video Game Nerd goes into detail of all the major problems, with the absolute worst being that Duncan's arm hasn't been sped up to work with a controller. The reason I'm mentioning him is because I'm too busy to get into it.

That genre is known as "Cinematic Platformer" thanks to heavy use of story telling.
Other games included are Blackthorne/Blackhawk, Prince of Persia (Original two) Oddoworld: Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus. And those are just the famous ones.
And with this game. You'd be better off playing the original MAC and PC versions as Dark Castle is meant to be played with mouse aiming. All ports were disasters.

I'd say it's about as much of a platformer as Flashback or Another World could be considered platformers.

Not to say that I'm comparing these games by quality, but some level of design philosophy when it comes to player navigation and interaction.
