@Saft1234: Means they're identical to one of the sprites before it.

What does recycled sprites mean?

I was wondering why Toad's pants were blue until I realized it's a reference to how the Toad that appears in the original SMB3 has red pants. Pretty neat detail.

Yes that what he looked like in SMB3 true. However, Luigi was also "Green Mario" in Super Mario World's first release on SNES. At least they fixed Luigi in the All Stars Re-Release pack. Also, if they stuck with your statement, they would have used "Green Mario" in the SMW style in this too. But at least they gave SMW Luigi a decent look for SMM2. I am pretty sure they could do the same for SMB3 Luigi in SMM2.

@Ton However, Luigi was slightly a different color in the real Super Mario Bros. 3.

@N-Mario this is literally what he looked like in Mario 3.

I don't like how they recolored Mario green, and called him Luigi in this style for SMM2. I'm pretty sure there were legit Luigi SMB3 sprites laying around somewhere. Esp. since we have a legit Luigi sprite for SMW style this time around.

@MrDimas: It's something that I've done for a few of my recent sprite sheets to signify if the sprites are unique (blue background) or recycled (green background). Toadette has the least amount of recycled sprites due to her pigtails obeying gravity.

Why do some sprites have a green background?

@Sanic Hogeheg: If you compare the sprites side-by-side, you can see they're quite different.

Toad looks like Nintendo just stole his sprites from Mario 3 Mix, and called it a day

@JMTeen. Most likely to be consistent with SMW, NSMBU and SM3DW.

Wonder why they let you crouch in the SMB and SMB3 style as small mario when you can't do that in the original games.

Poor Luigi. Even in this format, he's still a Green Mario. XD

@Doc von Schmeltwick: Force of habit, heh. I'll go change that.

I'm curious, why did you label it as "Kuribo's Shoe" when it's been called "Goomba's Shoe" since the second English cartridge revision of SMB3?

They look like some guy with an Amiga was like "Ah, screw it, i don't get paid enough for this" and just slapped on the keyboard and those were the hex codes that came out

Oh god, the Fire Luigi colors they picked for the 8-bit styles look like they came from an MSX bootleg.
