well SPM kinda didn't have a way to tell how the player's TTYD playthrough went (or if they even played it), so it had to default to something. Though that reminds me, it would have been insanely cool (and actually feasible I think) for SPM to check the Wii's memory for a TTYD save file, since the original Wii could play GCN games and I'm fairly certain other games would use a feature like this to unlock content.
As for what is canon to SPM, it's getting Ms. Mowz and having a Green Yoshi. The poses are different between this game's photo and SPM, but the positioning is the same. The position and poses for the PM64 partners is the same as in SPM
I thought the PM64 group photo in Mario and Luigi's house at the beginning was a cute reference, but the second one being added next to it in the epilogue was just the icing on the cake.
