@random They are officially called Tetriminoes as The Tetris Company is notorious in terms of having control over the game rules, terminology, etc. Most people call them tetrominoes, shapes or blocks though.

I think the tetrad name came from Captain N: The Game Master. Neither Tengen (Atari) or Nintendo used the name and I don't think Sega did either...
