@RQM: The text says "メトロイド", which is pronounced "Metoroido", but is just a phonetic spelling of "Metroid" in Japanese.

Eh, it's just that the "Metroid" text in the NES version doesn't use the same style as the Japanese text. They later used "Metroid" in English to preserve the spritework in all versions. Though some might've been developed by a US team first, like Fusion was, and the Japanese devs got lazy.
I never thought that Metroid in japanese would look so weird.
