@teh_supar_hackr: Yep, that's exactly the case. Mario's sprites for example have his face tiles use a separate palette than the rest of his body. Not as fancy as the sprite-layering methods used in other games, but it gets the job done.

I think each sprite is separated into different 8x8 tiles which can hold up to 3 colors per tile.

How did they get more than 3 colors

Glad to see this getting acceptable-by-current-standards rips now! Can't wait to SMAS-ify and use the tiles and such for my own sinister purposes...
