The NES can only handle so many sprites on-screen and since the rainbow is gonna be made to flicker anyways, it's simpler to flicker the halves between frames.

I mean, why are the two halves of the rainbow never seen at the same time?

@thejohnston7 The NES' sprites are limited to three colors (four if you include transparency). The rainbow's upper half uses one pallete while the lower half uses another.

Why is the rainbow split in two?
