The engine was used for a Yoshi flash game, Angel and Charlie.

Fun fact: This was one of the very first Mario fangames ever made. It's 1994 launch date predates the Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 by about 2 years, and both the NES and Famicom recieved their last games in 1994. Kinda crazy to think about.

Indeed. Most of them, especially Super Angelo, are still too much like Mario.

Mike Wiering really is not a guy with a lot of creativity.

The guy who made this would go on to make indie games with the same engine.
His most well known one being Charlie the Duck.
