@DZTVE: They're models in the mobile ports (and by extent Sonic Origins) so they wouldn't be here if they were.

Stealth confirmed that the chaos emerald colored rings are the flashing rings that you see at the checkpoints within the special stage.
As it turns out, Tails' arms were fixed as well. Here's a pic from Sonic 2 on the Genesis:
At least they actually fixed Knuckles' special stage sprites here,so he's not just Knuckles' head slapped onto a Sonic body.

I assume that the rings in the colors of the Chaos Emeralds are a reference to Chaotix's Holy/Chaos Rings.

Hmmmmm... Maybe using that 04, 01, 02, 06 code, then grabbing that hidden 8th Chaos Emerald could do something... I'm attempting it now...

Those rings are used to mark checkpoints in the Special Stage. They're on the top.
I just realized I could have said World Ring looking things or Chaos rings.
