s1 sonic's first backwards view

I like how most of Sonic's sprites make him look like he doesn't want to be in this game.

@squidiskool The Master System was decently capable however not many developers got to push the boundaries due to that Sega/SIMS/Aspect were involved with like 85% of the library (the other 10% were British developers who knew the Z80 like the back of the hand due to the Spectrum and CPC and the rest were Brazil, South Korea, a few from the US including Mark Cerny). When playing the game itself, it doesn't have much sprites due to avoiding sprite flicker (Double Dragon was notorious for it). Many Master System games used the background layer to avoid sprite flicker but the downside is that you get jerky movement like in After Burner, Golden Axe and Altered Beast. So this game uses a mixture. The sprite of Sonic in the helicopter was originally thought of as fake but how that managed to get around was the helicopter was with the background and when Sonic goes in, it changes to that sprite. There's an entire thread talking about the game and its development.
As for the sprites themselves, Tiertex ripped the sprites from Sonic 1 and then got someone to make customs with a few edits such as the continue sprites. Not the last time that they had done this, the infamous Strider Returns on the Genesis sprite ripped from the MD port of Strider.

How did the Master System do this?!?!?!

@SFM I'd say it's probably because these are gigantic as far as the MS's screen size goes. That wouldn't do well for a full platforming game.

@SFM Might be because it was identical to the 16 bit ones and had too many colours.

Why these sprite wasn't appear in other Master System Sonic games?

Well. The flat-spiked Sonic from Sonic 2's rotating animation returns.

I can't get over how ridiculous those back sprites look, with the western design's "mohawk" look. Thank goodness he didn't look like that in the 3d special stages from the MD games.

Little did Sonic know that nearly 12 years later his doppelganger Shadow would create Shadow's Edgysoft, commonly known as Shadow the Hedgehog

"I think Sonic got 'math' confused for 'meth'." - Binny

The only time it's "The american design" is when hes facing the back. It's easier to sprite as well. I will agree Toei sonic does look better

Why nobody respects the Japanese Sonic design?

Nice Genesis sprite downgrade
