I'm so glad that Fang is back in the mainline series again.

Not to mention that Fang being called a weasel (or half-weasel) was always inaccurate since he was never such. He was designed to be a jerboa (a type of kangaroo rat, despite being not evolutionary related and yet evolutionary convergent), which would have made him as small as Charmy if this game was released on the Genesis, as this concept art would attest. He was made bigger in order to make him more visible onscreen.

At least changing Fang the Sniper to Fang the Hunter made sense considering the series is targeting kids (his title would imply that he uses a gun that I believe was shown in early screenshots of Triple Trouble and I think Sonic the Fighters, the latter was more of a pop gun though and that had it kept people would have thought he's a hitman like Agent 47 or Golgo 13, Sega doesn't want that risk).

Now with Sonic Superstars, they renamed Fang from "Fang the Sniper" & "Nack the Weasel" to now "Fang the Hunter". I guess Sega can't decide what Fang's name is!

Correction to my previous comment, during the development of Sonic Triple Trouble, he was known as Nack. Shinichi Higashi (the original designer of Fang) changed the name because the pronunciations of Nack and Knuckles in Japanese were too similar. Sega of America kept the name Nack since there was no pronunciation problem in English.

It's another situation like Eggman/Robotnik. "Fang" follows the tradition of theme names based on characters' traits and features whereas "Nack" doesn't really have anything meaningful for him. Sega seems to prefer "Fang" nowadays with current classic content.

Why do people still care about calling him Fang?
