Something that really annoys me about these sprites is the inconsistent amount of fingers the characters have.

Yup, this sprite style is seriously overused. I've seen so many fangames and animations use these sprites it's not even funny. It's pretty much the equivalent of the Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga sprites, which are similarly used extremely often.
On a side note, I consider this game to be the best out of the Game Boy Advance Sonic titles.

@Doc von Schmeltwick That alone is what drove me to hate the sprite style, along with horrible recolours/edits as "OCs". And it still ticks me off if I see a new fangame come out with those sprites. Even more if they clash it with genesis sprites.

@vexian Lots of fangames take Sonic sprites from here and the Sonic Advance trilogy due to the amount of pre-existing animations. Basically, if a fangame was made before Sonic Mania and Genesis/Mega Drive sprites aren't the ones, it'll be this.
Super Smash Brothers Crusade ripped sprites directly from here
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how Sonic got in Smash Bros.
