Wow I was mean to this guy 5 years ago, he was a decent Metal Sonic stand-in. That is to say most of his characterization went to Metal later.
You can spell it however you want, my brain says it : Gem - rel
The Sonic Wiki says only the Japanese manual said G-Merl. The comics, more recently IDW, use Gemerl.

not to start a whole thing like the sonic mania rips had with silver-mecha-metal sonic, but the character's official name in all game materials is g-merl, not gemerl :P
