@SFYTAG All of the SNES ports to the GBA were made lighter because of lack of backlighting.

They're invincibility palettes, actually. I suppose I might just be pining for the old days when a complete sprite rip for Hyper Sonic would be guaranteed to go on for frickever.

You can recolor Mario's entire sheet in seconds in paint.net with a palette and the paint bucket tool, if for some reason you need small fire Luigi with a hammer.

It's only redundant if you like recoloring every single sprite yourself for each context.
