It's worth noting that in this game, PiT, and this game's remake, Tanoomba is consistently twice as large as normal Goomba, so that's probably why it looks so different.
It looks more like the Goombas from Paper Mario 64, IMO. The idle and walking animations are similar, too.
I will never understand why for the battle sprites they didn't just take the regular Goomba sprites and edit those.
The overworld sprites look fine, and I love the design in general, but...I dunno, the battle sprites just seem rather odd.
