My non-Mario jRPG experience is basically the classic Phantasy Star games. Not Fire Emblem, not Final Fantasy.
@Doc Shining Force is one of my favorites, but if you ever get around to it, be warned that it's VERY dated. The story is predictable (because it helped codify many of the tropes we're used to in RPGs), and the battle mechanics are simple. If you're played any of the newer Fire Emblems, you won't be impressed. But the character designs and art are so charming that I keep going back.
Also, play Chrono Trigger. It's one of the greatest games ever made. That's not hyperbole.

@Ton Oh my God those people are adorable and I don't know why. Though the three on the right are pretty obvious, especially that one with the animalistic face.
....I need to actually play that game instead of "quick Google search" it, but I've already been roped into playing lots of other classic jRPGs I regrettably don't have enough time for, like Chrono Trigger and Live-a-Live.

Well, it looks like Climax made both games, and this one was a crossover game. So that IS Jogurt. Neat.
