This was something that was publicly shown off, and they were rebuilt using said tileset seen in the corner of the sheet. This is one of the few exceptions to the rule.

@Lemon Nope, we gotta make a new name, given how many permutations of Mario there are (Malleo, Fortran, multiple Mari's, Malltranari, Murkekow, Young Fortran, Fat Mario, Grand Dad...)

So in the original versions of Super Mario World, not only did Mario actually punch Yoshi, but Yoshi also looked like some sort of Burtonesque monstrosity.

It wasn't from a released prototype, but it was clearly used in a prototype at some point, since apparently tiles existed in a game at some point during making it.

Why is this sheet named "Yoshi (Prototype)"? This sprite didn't appear in any prototypes (There aren't even any SMW prototypes currently avaliable). A better title for it would "Yoshi (Pre-release)".
Well, I mean the design would've been okay if he'd had a longer tail.
Ah, okay. It's a pretty good recreation, though.
