iirc the way they used palletes on here is similar to that of the fire flower, due to the red and the dark green being on different 8x8s, the fact that yall couldn't figure that out means that this tiny trick worked. anyways back to the main focus (the yoshi sprites), i think they look pretty good, i think they should be a little bigger so that it doesn't look like mario is squishing yoshi in any form other than small.

Definitely in later years / games, but SMB1 only uses 3 colours per sprite for Mario and all enemies.
It's a game that doesn't use any fancy techniques like the use of an internal mapper or even layering for sprites.
SMB1 Deluxe on the other hand came out 14 years later for GBC and these sprites are an expanded version of its two Yoshi frames.

These would most likely be layered sprites with different colors, similar to that of Mega Man and Super Mario Bros. 2.

Back in the 80s, the devs would've probably used just 3 colours just like they did for Mario.
In that case, the darker shade of green would've been just red, which also makes it easier to read the sprite on a crt tv.
Nice sprites, though.
