The four fingered hands is because he's technically not a plain human, he's an 'overlander', a mutant like the animals
He was so out of place. Realistically drawn (Often compared to Morgan Freeman due to how he looks and the name as well) giving off an uncanny valley look. Especially when he was drawn with four fingered hands for some reason. (Yeah, everyone but the game characters had four fingered hands until Ian Flynn took over in 2006 as they began to keep everything consistent)
Everyone kind of hated him when the comic was running.
