Actually it's also Sonic 1's style, just more saturated to fit another player (Tails if Sonic, Ray if Mighty and Rouge if Shadow for instance). With that in mind, tip for romhackers: be mindful of the badniks as well, since they also do kind of share the player and eggman palettes as well.
