@Murphmario: Technically, they weren't already 32-bit. The amount of colors a sprite could use on 32x hardware was still 15 colors iirc, but the colors themselves are a different story. I think they use multiples of 8 for RGB values, while the regular Genesis only used multiples of 32 for RGB values.
(Bear in mind neither console actually used RGB, these are only how the colors appear when you check them using a color dropper tool.)
