Mario and Luigi actually didn't use the same walk cycle as they did in the final game, but instead reused the body sprites from Family Basic.

recreating those sprites for that damned video was one of the biggest mistakes of my life
I personally see it as maybe an early death animation, due to it sharing a slight resemblance to the one seen in Mario Bros.
Maybe the team was experimenting, thinking of cutscenes. SMB radically changed its direction during development, it started out as a shooter where Mario would fly using a cloud, and that eventually became the final game's underwater levels. They're actually the first stored in the rom!

Oh no. Spooky Wario's Apparition. I better not get a personalized copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES.
@ÿZEROLIGHT It's not, those are actual sprites that were sketched out by the developers on paper. They were shown off in a old promotional video.
Edit: Also why would the Wario Apparition appear in SMB1? Wario's first appearance in Super Mario Land 2 probably wasn't even thought of at the time.

...No, they're based on concept art.
I think this is based on a video where the Wario Apparition possessed the cartridge and was about to appear, so the spites you put as IDK is him telling you to turn off the game.
