That's my view of what the SMB style is. Since the game was an early title, the designs were a mix of ambitious designs, limited knowledge/experience of sprites, and favoring gameplay over looks. This results in boxy characters with (what was considered at the time) detailed designs. Super Mario falls into this being 4 sprites tall, primarily drawn with rectangles and movement never leaves his box. His poses/frames though, makes him come to life.
