@Kartwheel: That's because he was asleep when Dark Matter possessed him, most likely because they had to show he was possessed.

@onetoothpig Well to be fair, Dedede IS actively possessed/under the influence of Dark Matter all the way up until you defeat him and rid him of it, hence why his eyes are perpetually shut until then.
