I chose green because I felt that that's what they would have gone with, had it been developed around the same time the NES Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games were around. Final Fantasy II's character sprites had much different colors than what the official artwork had. The brown hair could have possibly blended in with the brown tiles too much, and there wasn't a color in the NES' palette that matched the "greenish blue" Crono has in the SNES original.
Maybe to fix that they could make the lower half of the body have blue instead of green? It still looks really cool. Would be cool to see someone make a homebrew Chrono Trigger for NES (And not some bootleg version)
Dunno about you, but the green and yellow colouring makes this look more like DIO than Crono.
