It probably had to do with typical television dimensions at the time vs. now.

I just see the bulldozers from Frogger.
When the cars' wheels are moving, they look a lot more like vehicles. But indeed, they look quite like spiders, when static!
You could've called this game "spider racers" and no one would have been able to tell otherwise.
