@SiFi270: Here's something interesting. SMG4 confirmed that his FC's colors are in fact supposed to be the same as the GBA Mario Bros. 4P Mario.
Oh hey, it's Player 4 from the GBA remake of Mario Bros.
EDIT: Having looked this up myself, it seems the instructions in question have a slightly different standing pose for small and super Mario that's not as symmetrical below the head.
Maybe there's something different about that fireball throwing pose too but if there is it's too subtle for me.
