i can’t be the only one who thinks the prototype chase sprites are better
It seems the "early" sprites depict what Sonic would've looked like had this been localized.

How come the intro cutscene's proto sprites look infinitely better than the final ones?
The buff Sonic animation has no known functions in-game, nor does it seem to in the Revision A (prototype) release.

I'm so happy someone's finally gotten these! I tried ripping them from screenshots myself, but that's really difficult. Especially since there's often layers of something over the sprite that you'd have to recolor and guess some things. Also! very interesting how cartoony this is! I don't think we've ever had a Sonic game that got this cartoony and expressive in the old days. I love the muscle graphics, and if I were to guess what they were for, I'd say they were for when Characters have a continue or something. Maybe when the characters respawn and they're "REVITALIZED!"
I've actually seen those "Early" sprites before on Sonic Central, circa 2004-2006
