why is it a gif?????? i'm kinda curious why it's like that?????

Before the days of PNGs and webps like we have now; it was either BMPs (too large in filesize for hosting), JPEGs (obviously not suited to sprites due to lossy compression) or GIFs (could be used for sprites, providing that there are less than 256 colors). There were other file formats but they were the main ones that early Internet browsers could view and for a while they had problems viewing PNGs (especially if you used Internet Explorer). So yeah, a lot of the early sprite rips are GIFs.
Some may still use GIFs especially the more old school rippers as it may have a smaller file size.
