If anything, "Sponge" is based off an S-marked orange Mario recolor that is an unused graphic in Super Mario 3D World.
I think it's just a coincidence, or down to the limitations of the hardware, that the colors look similar.
I just realized, does Mario not look a lot like "Sponge" from Vinesauce??
